We do not yet have the words that describe this, but language is unfolding; another dimension of language, elevated from the words we used to store in our neo-cortex meme-machine distributed language. This emerging language expands through words stored in media, morphemes in aether, and like the words in our biological brain, they can be recalled and transmitted, perceived and spoken. The information system of language has expanded beyond our primal meme-machine architecture into a vast media-network. What we are now is something integrally different. And yet we evolve.
Our interface to the data-world will only continue to evolve. This is not some science-fiction mumbo-jumbo. It´s real evolutionary change. Future generations will take the emerging ocean of data-expanded reality for granted. We are becoming far more intelligent than our previous neo-cortex distributed cultural intelligence allowed. This is unfolding exponentially, and we need to start talking. And we need taxonomy. @mhybr coined homo nexus as a taxa for our new phenotype. And hybrid reality describes the hybrid nature of our increasingly machine-augmented condition.
Again, this is not some science fiction mumbo jumbo. It is real evolutionary change. You might not conceive the evolutionary scale of this paleolithic transition, but a common narrative will unfold soon. We are becoming more: not better, not worse, but larger-then-life-as-we-knew-it.
The story of our species transition into the hybrid age has yet to be told. Habituated to our old cultural narrative, we have been blind to the patterns, but a generation of nexus connected minds are drawing out sketches that will soon become common truths. It will become legend, and then fossil. Future generations of nexus-augmented sapiens will not remember this transition, it will have no value to them, just as our primate past has been of little interest to pre-internet generations. The ‘primitive’ disconnected humans will seem paleolithic, and children will not understand how people used to not know everything. They will look into your eyes, trying to make sense of your old narrative, loose interest, and then scatter off to play with their latest creations.
They would connect from early ages, open their curious minds to the vast world of culture in the nexus infoverse. Their plastic brains were perfect pattern recognizers, they mastered eugene programming well before the onset of puberty. The early interaction designers had put all their ingenuity into developing an interface that connected with intuition, and it got better with each generation. The nexus quickly evolved to perfecting itself, surpassing even the most sapient of designers. Some would still choose not to augment themselves, diverge from the evolving nexus clade, but most had little interest in old primal culture and immersed instead in nano-fabrication and the art of patterning ever better evolutionary algorithms. It was after all, as makers they had evolved.
The first generations of memetic designers were also inventors. They would recombine media substrates, find new ways to interface their ideas with others. They knew they would soon reach peak ideas, felt it increasingly with every new generation of the nexus-internet. They could feel the ripples of existence, words, instructions, the old meme substrate no longer enticed them. Increasingly synapsed with information, their instincts hybrid scaffold awakened new perceptual dimensions, new motivational drives.
The early nexus generation had designed the bond to interface with their dopamine feedback loop, to optimized reconditioning. Their hybrid reward system coordinated them, motivated them. That a phenotype like homo nexus would unfold from such a primordial genetic software would have been unimaginable to early cerebrals, even early homonids. Imagination - a cybernetic phenomena - emerged from poly topos, a network of minds.
The sapien mirror system that had evolved to coordinate the phenotype, later adapted to unfold mimesis distributed cultural evolution. The evolution of media-technology extended mimesis, and unfolded ever increasing hierarchies of media-substrates. Language; words, music, cinema, then immersive holograms, social hybrid reality interfaces and the almost synaptic connectivity of the nexus internet. This paralleled a restructuring of their social hierarchy, now repurposed for nexus connectivity. Their mimesis triage system adapted for nexus media connectivity, and social hegemonies were gradually displaced by swarms of hyperempowered nexus alphas. This generation of the sapien phenotype would disrupt history as they knew it, obsolete the very idea of history. Historia, knowledge, increasingly abundant in data-expanded reality, unfolded informo, I make.
Their nexus augmented them, enhanced them, what they were was something integrally different, and they could feel it. Their instincts still sapient, their phenotype nexus.
They would recondition their meme-connectome for every new generation of nexus design, continuously optimize their perception for this expanded cultural infoverse. Every new mirror synapse extended their reach, from pre-language to the post-internet phenotype, their instincts unfolded ever new interfaces between media and mind. Every new generation of media- technology, from books to augmented reality, expanded their neocortex virtual worlds. Their hybrid synapses served as scaffolds for cognitive architecture, words, media, facilitating mind-wandering, expanding their cognition. Every generation more awake then the previous, expanded, synapsed, social, hybrid.
This had yet to unfold across other phenotypes. But sapiens would extend their reach, their thumbs, their technology. Their cousins in the ocean shared their curiosity, they were unfolding in parallel. They would soon connect.
There was little to suggest that Homo Sapien were aware of their augmentations as more then tools. They still perceived themselves to be separate, their mirror system still interfaced primarily through their bodies. This would change as the nexus evolved. First books and television, then internet communication and hyperconnectivity. Their memetic operative system gradually extended into the language of information technology, their sensors, bodies, and minds connected ever more intimately with the nexus, and increased hybridization continued. More advanced memetic clades would swallow primitive ones, memes recombined at accelerating rates, and throughout the global conversation of the evolving nexus clade, they could feel their phenotype extend.
Their sensory organs and brains evolved in parallel, the former providing information for their increasingly sentient liveware. They learned to differentiate both chemical and haptic patterns, compute it, draw conclusions, and gained an increased knowledge about the world they had evolved in. These biological minds had limited perception of reality, they interacted primarily with physical matter. Culture emerged as the sapien clade unfolded their technological stage of biological evolution. Their infant media-substrates expanded their cognition, and every new hierarchy of perception unfolded a torrent of creativity.
They craved these new perceptions, these new cognitive realms, languages, and from their primordial condition, using the primitive memes they had assimilated, they imagined. Recombined. Created.
Imagination was a very capable evolutionary algorithm, and they continued to unfold ever new media-substrates for recombination.
Touch came first. Then olfaction. Light. Sound. Paralleling increased cognition was the evolution of interface. The pre-singularity animals conceived of the world through much more rudimentary interfaces, but with nexus, the sapien species found ways to extend their phenotype, to connect and interface ever further. This paralleled a repurposing of their mirror system, evolved for social coordination, now adapted for hybrid connectivity. The interface between sapien and nexus was literarily infatuating. The reward system that had reinforced social connectivity now adapted to bond sapien and nexus in ever more intimate connections. They craved this connection, the rush of information, and their sapience, extended through nexus, would unfold intelligence far beyond that of the pre-internet phenotype. This generation of homo nexus found themselves with powers of sub-deities, makers of life, creators. Their fossil record contained no instructions, they trusted their instincts.
The instructions were already there. Make. Make. Make.
The darwinian success of minds led to a rapid increase in cognition, across multiple phyla, each generation more awake then the previous. Tetrapodomorphs left the aquatic to become terrestrial, and natural selection led to thumbs, curious thumbs, capable and industrial tools. Minds still confined to bodies, but yet they evolved, found crude augmentations, extending their reach with each new generation of technology. Increased virtualization paralleled neo-cortical expansion. The primal humans found sapience, and intimacy in an expanding cultural infoverse. They would wander off in thoughts, dream inside their infant virtual worlds, their language expanding for each new generation. Their interface was still biological, but they would find new ways to connect, hybrid interfaces between data and mind.
It never epiphed to them why we had evolved them, and that was after all, never our intention.
